What’s IPTV („Internet Protocol Television“)?
IPTV (“Internet Protocol TeleVision”) is linear television television delivered via an IP-Network and may be received via an network-enabled computer.
How can I watch IPTV?
All that is required is a connection to the dormitory network and a program for receiving the RTP protocol. In some dormitories it is also possible to receive the channel list automatically via the SAP protocol. VideoLAN offers a player called VLC which is available on various platforms and supports the necessary protocols. We prepared a short How-To for you on selfnet.tv.
What’s the cost of IPTV?
Usage of IPTV, especially the public and FreeTV-Channels, is available to you at no additional cost.
Which channels can be received?
The channel list changes regularly. You can view it from the Selfnet network at selfnet.tv.
Why is channel XYZ not available?

What’s the quality of IPTV?
The quality of IPTV is the same as you would get with a satellite dish. Unfortunately bad weather may affect the service.
Can I use IPTV via WLAN?
Yes, you can also access the IPTV via WLAN. However, bandwidth problems can occur with a slow WLAN, for example in the 2.4 GHz range. A LAN connection is therefore recommended for a stable connection.

Rundfunkbeitrag for IPTV?
IPTV distributes linear television, which is partly financed by RundfunkgebĂĽhren. More information on the statutory obligation to pay fees can be found at www.rundfunkbeitrag.de. There you can also see under which circumstances an exemption from the fees is possible.
Can I use the network or browse the internet while watching IPTV?
Of course, our network offers enough bandwidth to support both at the same time and without noticeable degradation. But: IPTV requires a certain bandwidth. In the WLAN, bottlenecks can occur under certain circumstances. The Selfnet WLAN operated by Selfnet is basically sufficiently well connected. However, poor reception over 2.4 GHz can have a strong impact on the bandwidth at the client. The same applies to own routers. Problems can occur in the 2.4 GHz band. The 5 GHz band should normally not cause any streaming problems.
Who is able to watch IPTV/ Where is IPTV available?
You may watch IPTV from any Selfnet network connection without limitation as long as it was activated for you.
What about PayTV?
No, it is not possible to get PayTV via SelfStreaming.
Can I use IPTV at my TV-set?
The easiest solution to use SelfStreaming on a TV is to connect a computer with the VLC Player to the TV. Old PCs/laptops or some single-board computers like a Raspberry Pi are also suitable for a permanent installation on the TV.

What languages are available?
Currently there are channels in German, Arabian, English and French. At some shows there might even be a separate audio stream in the original language.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of IPTV compared to normal TV?
At your normal TV-connection you can only receive German channels in standard quality, with IPTV on the other hand you may choose the quality and language on your own.
Can I record IPTV to watch the show later?
Because of the German law we are not allowed to offer any DVR functionality that would record shows on a automated basis. If you would like to make a private copy, it is allowed according to § 53 Absatz 1 Satz 1 UrhG, but you may not make it publicly available (e.g. via the internet).
