Do you want fast and highly reliable access to the dormitory network and the Internet?

With a standard network cable you can use a speed up to a 1000 MBit/s (~100 MB/s).

We are providing 2500 Mbps (~310 MB/s) over LAN to most of our members since 2023. Simply connect your computer to the network outlet using a standard network cable. A network outlet is present in all rooms!

Attention: In some dormitories there are “double” network outlets. Only one connection is working. Just use the other if the first one is not working.

Attention: Please be advised that only one will work because there is only one network cable routed through the building to the network outlet in your room. In some dormitory rooms the network outlet is not below the desk but behind a shelf or cupboard.

What kind of network cable do I need?

• A simple (copper) network cable Cat. 5e or Cat. 6 with RJ45 plugs should suffice.
• If you want a quality cable just look for Cat. 6 and proper S/FTP shielding. For those few meters between your computer and the network outlet it should not make a big difference anyway if the cable is not properly shielded, anyway.

How much money should I reasonably invest on a network cable?

• You can get a reasonably good (Cat. 6) and shielded (S/FTP) network cable for 1 to 2 Euro per metre.
• If you paid 20 Euro for a 2 meter cable that is not even shielded (UTP) you probably paid too much.

My device does not have a connector for a network cable. What should I do?

• There are USB/Thunderbolt/… to Ethernet adapters that you can buy. Make sure the adapter is capable of gigabit and USB 3.0.
• Tip: For your next laptop check if it supports this basic functionality before you buy.

What is a room network?

• As soon as we checked your (sub-) rental agreement we create an individual room network (according to the rental agreement). After that the network outlet in your room should work.
• You are legally responsible for what you do or connect to the network outlet.
• This is why the network rules for the dormitory network prohibits sharing of the connection with anyone else (§3 1st sentence).
• If you sublease/subrent your room you should block your cable network connection either by telling us (e.g.: by email via support@selfnet.de or during an office hour). You can also block your connection yourself by using MySelfnet. That way (by using MySelfnet) you can also apply for a resting membership if you want to do that.
• A subtenant can then become a member him/herself and show us his/her own subrental agreement.

I want to connect more than one device. How can I do that?

• To do that you can either use a simple network switch or a router.
• A network switch is the cheaper option and is a lot easier to use because you just have to plug it in.
• A router has to be configured before you can use it. A “Router HowTo” can be found on our website.
• If you need additional assistance you are welcome to visit one of our office hours with your devices (router, laptop, …). It is also recommended to visit either Allmandring 8a or Heilmannstraße 4B if you need technical assistance.

But there is no network outlet in my room!

• In every dormitory there is one network outlet in every room!
• In some rooms, however, (for reasons unknown to us) the network outlet is behind a shelf or cupboard. Just search for it and you will find it.

Potential problems

• Is your computer configured to automatically (DHCP) receive an IP address from the network?
• Did you check if all cables are properly attached? On both ends?
• Did you already reboot/restart your device?
• PC network interface damaged or deactivated?
• With dual network outlets: Is the network cable plugged into the correct connector? If in doubt just try the other one!
