The Network
Selfnet operates a state-of-the-art network to interconnect the student dormitories in Stuttgart and their residents. All of this is done by students who volunteer alongside their studies.
Upstream
Selfnet has got two 20 Gbps fiber optic uplinks. They connect with two different routers via two different paths to two locations of the States Reasearch and Educational Network (BelWü).
Redundant Network Topology
Almost all dormitories are interconnected with 10 and 20 Gbps fiber optic links. A 40 Gbit/s connection was established between the large network nodes in Vaihingen, Möhringen and Stuttgart North and East. The three central server rooms also benefit from these speeds. There are a number of switches in each dormitory, to which all the rooms are connected with 1 Gigabit. For best possible redundancy, the switches are interconnected in a mesh. The topology has grown pretty complex, so we stopped drawing maps by hand and started using molecule simulation software:
